Description

El artista barquero is the final novel written by Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, in other words, conceived when the author had already reached her maturity as a writer for quite some time. In addition, it is the only work of this genre written on Cuban soil during the brief interval of her visit to the country of her birth, accompanied by her husband, Domingo Verdugo, a colonel and member of Spanish parliament. Although placing the action in a French setting and dating it back to the reign of Louis XV, the author manages to add a very personal touch to the story by means of the characters of “la niña,” born in Cuba of French father and Cuban mother, and the nursemaid, a Creole mulatto who answers to the name, “Niná.” As in all works of this type conceived by Avellaneda, there is a skilled handling of the characters and situations and an accurate reconstruction of the history of the period over which the plot rests.
